I know it sounds like a big, pseudo-spiritual Christian word, but let me break it down for you a little. It's not as intimidating or unrelatable as you think.
Holy
The very definition of the word 'holy' means: morally and spiritually excellent. So when God said in Leviticus 19:2, "You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.", that is what He was referring to. The words 'shall be' in the Hebrew means 'to become' or 'is becoming'. So it is a process that we are always going through.
When I speak of holiness, I do want to talk about the area of sexually purity in particular. Because as the definition showed us it means morally excellent. 🙏🏼
How to live holy
There are lots of verses I can give you, but for the sake of time we'll focus on 2 points and 2 verses.
1. Put on Christ
In Romans chapter 13, the last few verses, there is a subtilte for this section. It's called, "Put on Christ".
Paul is writing to the believers in Rome, telling them to put off the ways of darkness, and put on Christ. Meaning, stop living like the world, and live for Christ. The last verse in this chapter says, "But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts." In Greek, the word 'provision' means 'forethought' or 'supply'. Some of y'all are making WAY too much supply and planning to satisfy your flesh; to satisfy your lusts! 🤨 This is what we are NOT supposed to be doing. Galatians 5:16 says, "I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh."
The closer you get to Christ, the less your desire will be to fulfill the lusts of the flesh. But you've got to stop constantly feeding your flesh more than you do your spirit.
2. Submit to God
Romans 12:1 states, "I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, HOLY, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service." There's that word 'holy' again. Paul is telling us that we submit everything to God, even our bodies. We know from 1 Corinthians 6:19 that our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit. He now dwells on the inside of us when we give our lives to Christ. This is how you submit to God. It's when you say, "God, I fully surrender all of me to you. I submit my sexuality to you. And if you say to wait until marriage to have sex, then that's what I will do." That's what it looks like to submit to Him. With the help of the Holy Spirit, you CAN do this. But it's a choice. Are you going to satisfy your flesh, or your spirit? Because you can't do both.
