As a very famous verse, it can be easy to dismiss it because we think we already know it. So, I want you to pretend you've never read this verse before. Pretend this is new to you. But remember, there are two parts to this verse. Let's dive in and look at the deeper meaning of it.
1. Delight yourself also in the LORD
The word 'delight' is a verb. And a verb is a word used to describe an action, state, or occurrence. The biblical definition of 'delight' means: to be delicate, to be happy about, to incline to, take pleasure in.
This phrase emphasizes the importance of finding joy and satisfaction in a relationship with God. In the biblical context, 'delight' implies a deep, abiding pleasure and commitment to God. As believers, our joy and contentment is to be found in a thriving, abounding relationship with God, instead of the pursuit of worldly things. This is the same word that is used in Psalm 1:2, where the verse talks about the righteous person who delights in God's word.
The root word of 'delight' means: to be soft or pliable. The idea is that you are moldable. Able to be molded in God's hands.
The question is, are you? Will you allow God to mold you, and shape you? That can't happen if you're rigid or hard or stiff, or refuse to change.
2. And He will give you the desires of your heart
God giving you the desires of your heart are hinged on the first phrase. Because when your 'delight' is truly in the Lord, your desires will naturally align with His will. It means that your heart is open to His influence, and the direction He wants you to go.
When you align yourself with His purpose, the "desires of your heart" are not just any wish or hope that you have. It's not about getting all the "stuff", and just what you want. But they are things that line up with God's character and plans He has for you.
For some of us, I'm pretty sure we can look back and thank God for the prayers He DIDN'T answer, and give us the things we thought we wanted! 🙌😅 Because now that we're older and wiser, and have more mileage on this journey of faith, we can see that it was all flesh. Those were fleshly desires and not God's desires. God will put His desires within you, so that they become your desires.
But again, are you soft in His hands? Are you pliable, as to where if He decides to go in a different direction than you wanted, that you'll mold to that?

So what now?
This is where you take time to assess your own heart. Do an inventory on what you're desiring. Is it something that you believe is from God, or is it just your flesh?
Now, don't get me wrong. There's nothing wrong with having desires. Let's say, you do want a nice house or to buy a brand new car or a spouse. There's nothing wrong with that. But I'm speaking more of the place to where those desires are coming from. Do you want to be rich just to be rich? Or do you want to be able to bless people and the Kingdom? Do you want to get married because you're just lonely? Or because you believe with a spouse you'll be able to do more for the Kingdom? All I'm saying is check your heart.
For me, I still have a desire to be married and have children. That desire has never gone away. Which is why I believe it's a desire from God. But I've also come to the place of contentment in Him that if it never happened I will be ok. So that's what I mean by checking your heart. Because even if you never got the things you're desiring, will you still be content with Him? Would you still be satisfied with Him?
Pray this:
I want to encourage you to pray this prayer, and see how things begin to change for you:
"God, align my heart with Yours. Remove the things and people from my life that should not be there, and bring the things and people that should. I open my heart to You, and ask that You would put Your desires in my heart. Let those desires become my desires. I give you permission to uproot desires from my heart that do not align with Your will, even if my flesh wants it. Help me to recognize what is from You, and what is not. I want my delight to be found in You. I want to be soft and pliable in Your hands. Influence my heart in the direction You want me to go. I choose Your way over my way. I love you, Lord. In Jesus name, Amen."
